Superiority of ionic silver
Silver ions are stronger than silver colloids
A lively discussion has taken place online in America and abroad. At the end of the 90s some companies started to produce predominantly colloidal solutions, arguing that real colloidal silver (silver nanoparticles) would be much more effective than ionic silver. We’ve collated some studies that deal with this issue.
1. Work of the celebrated Dr. Becker
Ionic silver is the form of silver most used in hundreds of clinical studies since the beginning of the 20th century. Relatively recently (in the 80s) Dr. Robert O. Becker researched the effectiveness of electrically generated silver ions at Syracuse University. He attributed the ability of silver to fight pathogens to silver ions, the ionic form of silver.*1
In addition, Dr. Becker used a small electrical device, which generated a low charge of a few microamperes to produce silver ions in the human body. This device much resembles the colloidal silver generators used at home today.
2. Scientific work of the U.S. Army medic R.D. Todd
The laboratory trials carried out since this time have demonstrated that ionic silver is up to 10,000 times more effective than colloidal silver*2. This might seem surprising, given the number of people who favour silver particles (colloidal silver).
Below is an extract from a comparative study written by a former U.S. Army medic R.D.Todd:
"The results were astonishing! With or without the HCl mixture added, the Staphylococcus cultures (both S-1 and S-2) on the plates were virtually eradicated in just four minutes when treated with ionic silver. But the culture plates treated with the so-called “true colloid” particulate silver showed only a slight reduction in the bacterial count!
The main findings of the study are as follows:
Before being treated with HCl, the silver ions kill the bacteria in four minutes. Ionic silver is at least 100 times more powerful than silver particles.
Silver particles, which contain a small quantity of silver ions, lose almost all their antibacterial activity when the ionic silver component is removed (a result of the reaction with HCl).
In comparison, the loss of antibacterial activity in ionic silver, when in contact with HCl is negligible.
After being treated with HCl, under the same experimental conditions, the ionic silver is shown to be 10,000 times more powerful than the silver particles.
The facts are as follows: ionic silver killed all S.aureus microorganisms within four minutes of exposure, whereas the silver particles showed only slight antibacterial activity.
3. The company Natural Immunogenics proves the superiority of ionic silver over colloidal silver
A much more recent study again confirmed the superiority of ionic silver over colloidal silver*3.
The company Mesosilver claimed that silver colloids are more effective at killing pathogens than ionic silver. Their product is 90% colloidal whereas most “colloidal” silvers on the market are 75-90% ionic with the rest being colloidal. Mesosilver stated that ionic silver converts into silver chlorides in the stomach, by coming into contact with hydrochloric acid and therefore becomes ineffective.
The company Natural Immunogenics, which produces Argentyn 23, claims on the contrary that the ionic part is more effective at killing pathogens. Their product is 95% ionic.
In order to resolve the dispute, Natural Immunogenics performed a study. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial effectiveness of ionic and colloidal silver. This was to be achieved by comparing the two products, Argentyn 23 and Mesosilver, after the free ion content in both products was reduced or eliminated equally to the extent that only the particulate content in Mesosilver remained. This of course would reduce the ionic content of Argentyn 23 by the same amount.
This was accomplished by first exposing both products to the same amount of HCl. Identical bacterial concentrations and dilutions of two strains of Staphylococcus aureus (S-1 and S-2) were then used to test each product. This testing was accomplished by exposing healthy strains of the bacteria (ranked by dilution) to the two products after adding 10µl of HCl solution (in various concentrations).
Conclusion: The product Argentyn 23 (95% ionic) demonstrated higher bactericidal activity than the product Mesosilver (90% colloidal).
4. Researchers ofrom Rice University in the United States concluded that ionic silver is more potent
In a press communication from Rice University, clinical researchers long debated the results of their recent study in order to give it an unambiguous title:
“Ions, not particles, make silver toxic to bacteria”
In this study, published recently in 2012 in the journal “Nano Letters”, the researchers successfully demonstrated that it is silver ions that have high bactericidal power and not the silver particles, also known as metallic silver.*4
5. List of over 100 studies demonstrating the effectiveness of ionic silver
In “The Ultimate Colloidal Silver Manual” 183 clinical studies demonstrate the amazing effectiveness of the ionic form of colloidal silver*5.
Several of these studies were conducted at the “Brooke Army Medical Center” in Texas. They prove that silver must be in ionic form to speed up the healing process. This world renowned Army Burn Center was at the forefront of research in treating burns and conducted research on silver in medicine for decades.
Albert T. McManus, Head of Microbiology at the Army Burn Center said:
“... conversion of silver to silver ions is necessary for efficacy”.
